WELCOME TO MURRAY KIN

SELKIRK COMMON RIDING-
IN MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO FELL WITH THEIR KING AT FLODDEN FIELD

My name is Alexandrina Murray, and I have created this blog specifically for descendants of the Scottish Murray Families from the Border towns and Shires of Selkirk; Roberton; Lilliesleaf; Stow; Melrose; Bowden; Eildon; Galashiels;Yarrow; Ettrick; Innerleithen Pebbles; Ancrum; Roxburgh; Kelso; Ladhope; Jedburgh and surrounding districts.

If your Murray kin were originally from Selkirkshire, Roxburghshire or Peebleshire, please join our online community. We would love to hear from you.

Family members of 'Our Murrays' were known to have left Scotland to live in Australia, Canada and the United States of America as well as the Kiwi country of New Zealand. As we all endeavour to rejoin the 'silver thread of kinship' that binds us all, it is my hope that the lives of those foundation Border Murrays families will take on new meaning for all of us, as well as for our own descendants.

We may learn more about ourselves by studying their particular circumstances, and also perhaps come to realise the reasons that many of them originally left their beloved Border homeland. Some of us may be reunited with our direct/indirect relatives and correspond with many new and interesting people with lots of intriguing stories to share. Our Blogs will expand from families who were located in specific areas.

ie: Stow Selkirkshire Murrays-

William Murray & Christian Pringle of Ferniehurst Stow & Lauder & Channelkirk

John Murray of Ferniehurst and his wife Alison Thomson, and second wife Elizabeth Isabel Watherston, son of the above William Murray & Christian Pringle.

John Murray of Laidlawstiel Stow & his wife Janet Lauder of Selkirk.

ie: Selkirk Murrays- James Murray and Elizabeth Hall from Selkirk.

Their children Alexander Buchan Murray b.1818 and wife Agnes Wylie; also known as Nancy Wylie- also his brother:

John Murray and his wife Helen Moffat, their children including:

William Murray and wife Elizabeth Lees, and onto their son:

John William Murray and his wife Alexandrina MacInnes who emigrated from Scotland to Australia in 1926. Also their 2nd son:

Thomas Lees Murray and his wife Elizabeth  who remained in Scotland and settled in Glasgow and have a very large family still residing in Scotland.

Also researching: The Murray family of Philiphaugh in Selkirk related to above-

Looking for descendants of:
James Murray and Elizabeth Hislope- Selkirk 1790's- Stockingmaker Burgess
James Murray and Elizabeth Anderson- Selkirk 1750's - Tailor Burgess
Andrew Murray and Anna Carmichael- Canongate Edinburgh 1720's - Tailor Burgess
All Murrays of Traquair and Innerleithen; Eddleston; Newlands in Peeblesshire.

Also matching exactly yDNA 67/67 are the Morrow family of USA whose name morphed from Murray to Morrow late 1700's in Pennsylvania; Ohio; Maryland; Indianna and Minnesota. Relationships have been found with Adam Murray hero and Defender of Londonderry Ulster 1680 circa whose descendants emigrated to Pennsylvania 1740 circa.Susan Morrow Smeltzer and brother Beau Morrow are researching their direct ancestors who emigrated to America circa 1770-1790: herewith

We have Thomas Morrow (Murray) Tailor of  Clear Creek County Ohio who married Matilda C Blair and secondly Cynthia Burnside. Hisr son to Matilda is Dr Lafayette Blair Morrow who matches our Scottish Murrays 67/67 on yDNA testing= exact match.

Also related are William Morrow who married Barbara Ann Zantzinger and David Morrow who married Mary Fleming and Mary McLean -Mary Mecklin , also pronounced Mecklin in America at that time.

Eventually each family line will have their own Blog. If you would like to add your family here- please create a NEW post (accessed from very top of the page on right hand side; placing their names into the header along with their place of residence.

Other Murray family researchers will hopefully join in the conversations and provide very valuable information on their direct ancestors. ie: John Murray of Jedburgh is researching his direct relatives Robert Murray and Helen Leithhead + their children including Robert Murray and wife Christian Lockie residing in Sunderland Hall in Selkirk 1850's.

Irene Thoroughgood also of Scotland is researching her direct line from John Murray of Peebles and his wife Elizabeth Laidlaw +their children including Walter Murray and Younger Kerr of Sunderland Hall West Lodge in Selkirk in 1840's. See http://www.murrayofstanhope.com

Georgia Clement of Queensland Australia is researching her direct relatives and families descended from David Murray and  second wife Agnes Gray of Melrose and Bowden and Eildon. Also their relatives David Murray and Christian Buchan of Bowden.

Larry Murray along with Randy  Montgomery ; Cheryl and Larry Murray; Donald and Delane Jacques- of USA are all researching the above David and his first wife Elspeth Harvie (Elizabeth Harvey) through their grandson John Murray of Galashiels who went to America-Utah in the 1830's.

James Irvine Murray of England is researching his Murray family of Cockpool  [Dumfriesshire]-related to the Murray family of Philiphaugh whose yDNA results matched our own Murray family of Philiphaugh and Traquair.

PHILIPHAUGH HOUSE -NEW

Other families researched here are:

William Murray (Shepherd) born 1775 circa Channelkirk Berwickshire and his wife Elizabeth Mitchell=
Researchers- Cameron Murray and Todd Murray of Canada and also William Bill Murray of Australia.

We also have Carole Murray Williams of Pennsylvania researching Thomas Murray and Janet Chancellor of Borelands by Eddleston in Peeblesshire; James Murray and Janet Scougal of Traquair;  James Murray and Anne Riddell of Roberton in Selkirkshire; and Thomas Murray and Madeleine Scott Young of Penicuik.

    Hello,
My name is Larry Murray and I am from Vernal, Utah in the United States. I am very interested in learning any and all facts related to my family history. I am descended from David and Elispath Harvey through John Murray. I will be traveling to Scotland this summer and will try to spend time in Melrose. Any information would be helpful.

    Hi Larry,

I hope that you receive this OK. When will you be leaving for Scotland & Melrose.?

My daughter and I were there this time last year Stayed in Melrose in a B&B next to Melrose Abbey where our ancestors were married...amazing place.

Just to let you know that I also took photos of David and 2nd wife Agnes Grey's tombstones in Galashiels/Ladhope , do you have them already?

I thought that I sent all the correspondence on to you however I have such a lot of it. Have you made contact with Georgia Clements as yet? Georgia is also descended from David Murray and 2nd wife Agnes, and has male Murray cousins etc, I know one is a Doctor here in Sydney so I spoke to her via email about the DNA test that my father undertook.

She said that she would contact her male Murray cousins and see if they were interested in contributing. They descend from the same line of course except that it is a different branch of the same tree as your family.

Considering that your family is so immense, and I have all of our Murrays as well, and Georgia has hers, if we can somehow get a yDNA sample from Georgia's side that will tell us once and for all if we are all related . I will cc this to Georgia as well and see how far she has gone with everything to date.

Sorry that I did not reply sooner, I have had an accident (August 2009) on the way back from Scotland actually , in Japan, I have not been able to walk and now hobble around on a walking stick; family research on the back burner accordingly.

Hope to hear from you soon.
    Och the Noo

  4. Is this the only way to communicate with Murray family folks? I have looked through this blog thing several times, but am not sure how it all works. I ended up directed to a blog creation site where I enrolled and put in basic information, but that did not connect me in any way to this. I set up a blog, "Wyoming Murray Connection," under jimwilliamsjhw, but how do I get Murray family folks to look at it? Just wondering... Thanks. James H. Williams

    Looking for Scottish Murray roots
I've been researching my maternal grandmother's roots in Scotland, but have run out of leads and connections. I happened across a Murray family blog by Alexanderina Murray in Australia that got me energized for more searching. My maternal grandmother was Helen "Nell" (Murray) Hodson, formerly Helen "Nell" Murray Spiers of Galaschiels, Selkirkshire, Scotland. She was born on June 20, 1887, in Galaschiels, Selkirkshire, Scotland, according to family records. She and two sisters (Mary Ann "Annie" (Murray) Smail & Agnes "Aggie" (Murray) Arnott) emigrated to Eden/Farson, Wyoming, United States, around 1910-1913. Their father was William Murray (b.1848) and Elizabeth Stoddard (b.1851) both of the same area of Scotland. Sister Elizabeth "Bet" Murray, brother William Murray, and other siblings James, Andrew, Thomas, and maybe a Maggie stayed in
    Scotland.

William Murray, my great grandfather, was apparently the son of James Murray (b,1818) and Margaret Williamson (b.1822). James Murray's parents were, perhaps, Andrew Murray (b.1796) and Agnes ?? (b.1801). Margaret's parents were, we think, William Williamson (b.Abt 1786) and Margaret ?? (b.Abt 1781). At this point in our research, we come to a halt.

Elizabeth Stoddard, my great grandmother, was the daughter of James Stoddard (b.1814) and Elizabeth Thompson (b.1813). We have been able to trace James back 4-5 generations (we think), but not Elizabeth. Her parents were apparently William Thompson (b.1780-91) and Agnes Pringle (b.1780-81). Hers ends there.

Anyway... I'm stumped and looking for help. Anyone out there with some input for me?

    1. Hi James,

Did you get any further back with William Murray & Elizabeth Stoddard? and were they also from Galashiels, do you know? I also have a Thomas Williamson of Selkirk.

If James Murray was born in 1818 who was his father and where was he born and do you know when and where he married Margaret Williamson?

      Cheers Sandie

    3. Hi James,

Have you found William born 1848 in the census?
How do you know that his father is James born 1818 and Margaret Williamson?

These look like relatives of ours. See the entry from Cameron Murray about William Murray and Elizabeth Coldcleugh of Galashiels Melrose who went to Ontario Canada and also from Bill Murray re William Murray & Elizabeth Mitchell of Stow & Gala- all related. I can check with Bill & Cameron however this family should be documented by us.

Is this family your James Margaret & William???

    4. I had given up on my Murray search for a while (I got discouraged). It's been months since I've looked at it. This information you provided looks intriguing, but it will take me a while to get back up to speed and refresh my Murray knowledge. I'll let you know if your information is helpful as soon as I can. Thank you so much for the effort.

    5. The William Murray b 1848 (actually 8 Apr 1847) is in all likelihood, as Sandie indicates, the son of James Murray and Margaret Dickson. This William married Elizabeth Stoddard 14 Aug 1874 at Galashiels. This (and more) was confirmed by Brian Young a descendant of James Murray b 1818. I also have a photo of Martha Murray b 3 Jul 1855, a sister of William. She married John Grieve of Ettrick, Selkirkshire.

Hi my name is Delene Jaques,

I am a descendant of John Murray through David Murrray and Christian Buchan of Melrose Scotland area which are his known grandparents. In written record, Andrew (Jan. 27, 1793) and Elizabeth E. Murray are the parents of John Murray (June 20 1814 or 1812). However, some print information and genetic information may lead us to Elizabeth Murray Lightbody (which most likely was the daughter of Andrew Murray) being his mother. So, we are still trying to confirm with second round of DNA testing on both the male Murray and Lightbody side.

To us, we still have Murray blood. Our strength is very similar to many families around the world. We are hard working, and have a natural ability for problem-solving. We also serve in many local and state leadership postitions throughout the generations.

I have been really involved in geneology from a medical perceptive which is rather complex research project. We now have 5 major universities working on the project for the past 7 years.

We do have genetic testing (geneology format Family Tree DNA) on several Murrays in our line. We are always willing to share.

    Here is:

I'm sorry not to be in the loop right now. I just started teaching again full time to 6th grades in our local public school system. It keeps me very busy. Summer is coming very soon and my passion for geneology is always renewed.

    1. Hi Delene,

Yes Elizabeth Elliot Murray and Joseph Lightbody were the parents of your John.
Perhaps you can publish your research on the family. Did Larry enjoy Scotland?
I have just returned from yet another trip. This time 6- 7 weeks. Was in the Borders at Galashiels & Melrose Stow area for 10 days of that time.

      Take care

  10. Hi, although I am of the Selkirk Hogg's, on Dec 25 1761 Elizabeth Betty Murray (b. July 22 1733) married my ancestor, Thomas Hogg. He was born in Lewinshope Yarro Selkirk, on Mar13 1737. They add one child that I know of, William, born Nov 9 1766. Elizabeth's parents were David Murray and Agnes Daline. Any help would be much appreciated, especially with Hogg line, but am curious to know if her family owned Lewinshope. I'm assuming it's a farm...

  11. Hi, My Murray connection is Elizabeth Betty Murray b. 1733 to David Murray and Agnes Daline. I'm assuming in Selkirk, because Elizabeth married my ancestor, Thomas Hogg on Christmas in Galashiels 1761. He was born in Lewishope on Mar 13 1737 to Walter Hogg and Ann Lees. Elizabeth and Thomas had one child that I know of, my ancestor, William, who was born Nov 9 1766 in Selkirk. Any help would be much appreciated. Very curious to know of other siblings possibly connecting me to the poet James Hogg, and if Lewishope still belonged to the Murray family.

  12. Hi Stuart,

Elizabeth was Elizabeth DARLING not Darline though. Her father David was a Philiphaugh if I remember rightly. I was just over there to the Borders as have just arrived back Lewinshope certainly was a farm, and still is I think.

  13. Sorry my mistake....David Murray was the Murray of Philiphaugh and Elizabeth was the daughter of the Darlings of Appletreeleaves (near current day Ladhope & Caddonfoot)
