David Murray and Elspeth Harvie

David Murray was born in 1722 I believe in Traquair nearby to Innerleithen in the Scottish borders. He married firstly to Elspeth Harvie or Elizabeth Harvey in Melrose Selkirkshire, and secondly to Agnes Grey. His son David Murray was the ancestor of a very large group of Murrays from Utah in the USA via Davids son John Murray and his Irish wife Sarah Bates who settled in the USA.

This David was thought to have been a possible relation of our James Murray born 1797-1798 in Selkirk via his David.s son John Murray born 1766 circa in Melrose (also of Selkirk).

David Murray Senior was the owner of the Gala Bridge Inn in Ladhope Galashiels by Melrose and he is buried in the cemetery there beside his second wife Agnes Gray. This time last year July-Aug 2009 I visited their gravesite at Galashiels and took many photos, some of these will be posted here shortly. Further details regarding this family tree will be available shortly via a link from this blog. This David had a very large family including David Murray who married Christian Buchan- he was a Farmer of Eildon and Newhall. This David Jnr.is the Grandfather of John Murray of LDS fame who emigrated to America as a Soldier & married Sarah Bates. It is this clan who are the progenitors of an enormous Murray family in the USA today. Another branch of the family migrated to Canada and Australia through David Senior's 2nd wife Agnes Gray.

Researchers of this family include Georgia Clements of Australa, Todd Murray of USA, Larry Murray of USA x1; Larry Murray & Cheryl also of USA x2; Randy Montgomery USA; Delene and Donald of USA; and many many others.

I will be adding details of this family hereunder shortly so please comment by clicking the link under if you are related to Elspeth and David Murray.

  1. Here are SOME of the children on David Murray and Jean Anderson of Traquair and Innerleithen.

Not: Many of the children are missing from the parish records which are incomplete during this period Z: due to disruption in the church Z(Kirk)
    and much dissention from parishioners.

In order to locate the rest of David & Jean's brood, further research should be undertaken in order to find their marriages.:-if any.

    Hello,
My name is Larry Murray and I am from Vernal, Utah in the United States. I am very interested in learning any and all facts related to my family history. I am descended from David and Elispath Harvey through John Murray. I will be traveling to Scotland this summer and will try to spend time in Melrose. Any information would be helpful.

    Hi Larry,

I hope that you receive this OK. When will you be leaving for Scotland & Melrose.?

My daughter and I were there this time last year Stayed in Melrose in a B&B next to Melrose Abbey where our ancestors were married...amazing place.

Just to let you know that I also took photos of David and 2nd wife Agnes Grey's tombstones in Galashiels/Ladhope , do you have them already?

I thought that I sent all the correspondence on to you however I have such a lot of it. Have you made contact with Georgia Clements as yet? Georgia is also descended from David Murray and 2nd wife Agnes, and has male Murray cousins etc, I know one is a Doctor here in Sydney so I spoke to her via email about the DNA test that my father undertook.

She said that she would contact her male Murray cousins and see if they were interested in contributing. They descend from the same line of course except that it is a different branch of the same tree as your family.

Considering that your family is so immense, and I have all of our Murrays as well, and Georgia has hers, if we can somehow get a yDNA sample from Georgia's side that will tell us once and for all if we are all related . I will cc this to Georgia as well and see how far she has gone with everything to date.

Sorry that I did not reply sooner, I have had an accident (August 2009) on the way back from Scotland actually , in Japan, I have not been able to walk and now hobble around on a walking stick; family research on the back burner accordingly.

Hope to hear from you soon.
